Leh-Ladakh’s allure lies in its rugged landscapes, serene monasteries, and transportation options like air travel for convenience or road trips for adventure. From majestic Himalayas to thrilling motorcycle rides, every journey offers a unique experience

From adventurous road trips to convenient air travel, here’s a guide to choose the right modes of reaching Leh-Ladakh. Ladakh main city is Leh. ladakh opens in May/June and roads are open till November.

By air

For those seeking convenience and time efficiency, flying to Leh should be the preferred option. Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh operates regular flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. From Delhi, flights run daily costing 6k-7k for one way and travel time is 1:30 hours only. It’s important to note that due to the high altitude of Leh, some travellers may experience symptoms of altitude sickness (AMS) upon arrival. It’s advisable to acclimatize your body least one day in Leh to avoid discomfort.

By road

Opting for a road trip to Leh-Ladakh is a quintessential adventure for many travellers. The region is accessible by road from several routes, each offering unique scenic vistas and thrilling experiences.

Distance from both routes is approx. 430 Km. Here are those routes:

Manali-Leh Highway: Journey is done in two parts with the first day stay in Jispa or sarchu and next day you will reach Leh. This route takes you through some of the most picturesque landscapes of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Starting from Manali, the highway crosses high mountain passes like Rohtang Pass and Baralacha La, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and pristine valleys. The road journey is challenging due to rough terrain and high-altitude passes, but it’s a memorable experience for adventure enthusiasts.

            Manali > Atal Tunnel > Sissu > Keylong > jispa > Baralacha La > Sarchu > Gata Loops > Pang > Meroo > Leh

Srinagar-Leh Highway: Journey is done in two parts with the first day stay in Kargil and next day you will reach Leh. Connecting Leh with the picturesque Kashmir Valley, the Srinagar-Leh Highway offers a scenic drive through lush green valleys, meandering rivers, and charming villages. The route passes through iconic landmarks like Zoji La Pass and Drass, the second coldest inhabited place on Earth. Travellers can also explore attractions like Sonamarg and Kargil en route to Leh.

              Srinagar > Sonmarg > Drass > Kargil > Namika La > Lamayuru > Nimmoo > Leh

  • State-run buses and private luxury buses operate regular services to Leh from cities like Manali, Srinagar, and Delhi during the summer months when the roads are accessible. Tickets cost is Rs. 1500-2000 per person from Manali to Leh. If you want to travel in a sharing cab/car the cost for one person is 3000-3500 Rs. from Manali to Leh.

While bus travel offers a budget-friendly option, it’s important to be prepared for long hours of travel and limited amenities onboard.

I suggest traveling by air when with family as roads are dangerous and prone to accidents.

By motorcycle

For adventure seekers craving an adrenaline-pumping journey, a motorcycle trip to Leh-Ladakh is an unmatched experience. Renting a motorcycle in cities like Manali or Srinagar and heading onto a thrilling ride through winding mountain roads is a popular choice among bikers. However, it’s essential to ensure proper gear, adequate fuel supplies, and familiarity with riding in high-altitude conditions.

Important advice:-

  • Himachal Pradesh bike rental is not allowed in Leh City by local bike rental associations. So one can rent bike in Leh.
  • One can bring their personal vehicle to Leh, which can be the best option for anyone.
