Matheran in the Rainy season
Hello readers, I don’t want to exaggerate, but going out during the rainy season is always amazing. I knew I would be heading somewhere, but I didn’t know how I would be getting there. So, during the weekend, I planned to go out and get lost in the mountains.
I went to a place called Matheran. Matheran is one of the smallest hill stations in India, around 120 km from Pune and about 80 km from Mumbai. The beauty of the Western Ghats is abundant with green trees and serene views.
One of the best and most unique things about this place is that the roads are unmetalled and made of red soil. Vehicles are not allowed, making it Asia’s only automobile-free hill station and pollution-free. One can either walk or opt for a horse for transportation.
To reach Matheran, you can take a train to Neral and then a private sharing taxi (costing 100 Rs per person) to the Matheran entry gate (Dasturi Naka). Please note that Ola and Uber are not available in this area, as the only vehicle allowed inside the hill station is the toy train. If you prefer to take the toy train, please be aware of the following important information: The toy train operates from Neral to Matheran, but during heavy rains, trains are shut down from Neral to Aman Lodge station. There is no online ticket booking available, and ticket counters at Neral Station are opened 30-35 minutes before the departure of the train, operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
Walking up the hill on the railway track is something you should experience. The walk through the forest of Matheran was the most exhilarating I have ever done. Climbing is not much difficult especially when you are surrounded by such surroundings.
Once you reach Dasturi Naka you have to pay the entry fees (50 Rs) to the authority to enter the hill station. Selecting accommodation away from the market has two advantages
i. You get it comparatively cheaper and
ii. The main reason for visiting hill station i.e. enjoying solitude is a hundred percent guaranteed.

Please remember the following details about Matheran:
There are 10-15 points in Matheran that you can visit. Here are some of them that I saw:
1. Khandala Point: It is the closest to the market area and offers a great aerial view of the mountains. If you want to see the sunrise without traveling too far, Khandala Point is perfect for you.
2. Alexandra point: Nestled in the Sahyadris, this point provides the most promising views of the valley. You can easily spot the lush landscapes with meandering highways lined by colonial mansions. Khandala Point are Alexandra Point are very near to the market.
3. Sunrise Point: Also known as Panorama Point, it is the perfect destination for scenic hilltop views of surrounding mountains, cliffs, and ravines. It is one of the most spectacular points but requires a challenging trek. It is 4 km from the main market and takes approximately 1 hour to reach. Once you arrive, you will witness a mesmerizing sunrise.
4. Echo point: This is a fun place where you simply have to scream and shout to experience the echo. This place attracts a large crowd and is very popular among youngsters.
5. Charlotte Lake: This is probably the only lake that provides water to Matheran. Near this lake, there is a point called Celia Point, which has a reverse waterfall that everyone should visit.
6. Louisa point: Every point in Matheran offers a different yet marvelous view, and Louisa point is a perfect example of that.
There are many other points but these are among the best which one should see and photograph.
I would recommend to come down by Toy train as it would give you more comfortable experience. Again for tickets you have to stand in long queue at counters waiting for hours. To be honest, be patient to get a reservation.
Remember to carry essentials such as water and snacks while strolling in the Jungle.
- Carry cash and do not rely on ATMs or online payments. Some restaurants and hotels do accept card payments.
- Do not carry white shoes, as the red soil will spoil them. The best and most comfortable outfit is loose pants with a loose T-shirt and Trekking shoes.
- Do not carry edible items directly in the hand. There is a tribe of monkeys in the area, which may harm you.
- Power bank and a torch.
Plan your trip and if you need some guidance, I am here 😊
